Work Out For Me: The Joys of Teaching

"Is it worth it? Let me work it.

I put my game down, flip it, and reverse it."

- Missy Elliott

Have you ever heard the stsatement, "Those who can, teach?" We are not sure exactly how the "can" started for either of us, but we've both ended up in a position where we are helping coach others toward living their best, fit lives. Getting to this point happened outside of the plan we set and order for how we would get to this point (ain't that a life lesson). However, this journey toward teaching pushed and challenged us in new ways. Check out our thoughts on teaching fitness classes and what we are loving about the experience so far.

Teaching fitness classes has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life, so far. After I began meeting my own fitness goals and continued to push my own body further, I began thinking about how much joy I got out of training. I wanted to impact others in the same way. Although I was already thinking about teaching and studying to be certified in group training, my move to Memphis and finding ZenStudio Fitness put me in a position to  jump right in (much like a lot of what I do).

It wasn’t the physicality that scared me. It was the nerves and having the confidence to truly lead others through a class. Oh, and getting used to calling out the timing!

Having one hour a day of someone’s time to help them relieve stress, feel empowered to continue toward their physical goals, or seeing their face light up when they realize brings such fulfillment.  Personally, pushing myself out of my comfort zone has also been enlightening. This experience has empowred me to feel I can tackle any challenges thrown my way.

I love people. So when my friend asked me to help coach her boot camp class, I  was excited, but I had no idea what to expect. It was true that  I had over a decade of experience working out with different types of coaches, fitness instructors, and personal trainers, but this was the first time a group of people was looking to me to guide them through an effective exercise.

And it has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my fitness journey thus far.

Finding my voice and training style is challenging, yet fun. I know what it’s like to be on the other end of a command and I also know the feeling of pushing yourself beyond your expectations. I know that for some it’s more than finishing a circuit,  it’s about fighting life’s obstacles at that moment. I want every person I work with to know that in our time together, we are in it together, whether it’s getting through those last five push-ups or dancing through our breaks.

I am so inspired by clients when they achieve their fitness or weight loss goals, and helping coach them through the process has helped me cultivate my passion and purpose.
